Broken Color refers to applying color to a painting using strokes of paint without blending them in the process. You can apply Broken Color using a brush or a palette knife. This technique was made famous by artists such as Monet and Van Gogh.

In this class, students will learn about the history of Broken Color, the art movements that used it, and how to apply it to a painting they’ll create.

Over 3 classes, students will paint and complete a still-life with hands-on guidance from our instructor. Starting from learning color theory, blocking in basic forms and then further refining the painting with broken color.
